Common Questions
Commonly Asked Questions

This is not one of the 'training'
 techniques that we endorse....

Q:
If someone trains my dog other than me, how will it know to obey my commands?

A:
After we have completed your dog’s obedience training we will give you a complete, hands-on instruction session when you take delivery of your pet. (This only applies to the board & train program).
Q:
My dog lives in the house. How will he/she adapt to living in a kennel while being trained?

A:
Since dogs may be placed with a playmate of the same age and temperament, your dog will think he/she is at a “playground.” However, if you prefer, we will make arrangements for your dog to stay indoors in a crate while here for training, or to have a run to themselves.
Q:
Will my dog miss our family while away for training?

A:
Putting your dog with another dog of the same age and temperament will alleviate most of the stress involved with being in a new environment. Dogs are very resilient and most adapt very well to their environment at Seagull Kennels! Our facility is located on twenty scenic acres in Lexington, and along with other dogs, there are horses and cattle for them to watch!
Additionally, it is a good idea to send a favorite toy
that your dog enjoys playing with. (Remember that when returned, the toy may not be in the same state that it left in!)
Q:
What type of training will my dog be receiving?

A:
At Seagull Kennels we use postive reinforcement training.  We utilize verbal as well as hand and body signals.
Q:
Is the training program guaranteed?

A:
It is impossible to guarantee the results of every dog in any training program. What we can guarantee is that your dog will be taught the basic commands described under Program 1 when you take delivery of your pet. Follow up classes are included in the cost of Program 1 and allow you to continue working with your dog and address any problems you may be having.
Q:
How long will my dog have to be away?

A:
Our typical training period is 2 weeks. Some dogs do require a few extra days, but it is very rare. We keep the time away at a minimum.
